D.A.F.-Kebabtraum [T]
D.A.F are from Germany. They migrated to the UK and released this 7” on Rough Trade records in 1980.

Zorch-Zut Alor! [D]
I heard this song while aimlessly scrolling through a messageboard. Not what I would normally be looking for but really loved the synths. The demo has some moments that are a little too math-y for me(though, you might be into it…), but overall i’d say it’s very good. Great points of ambiance and synth experimenting.
A lyrical excerpt:
“Giant surprise/we are lizards disguised
and we’re controlling your lives/ with trilateral spies.
Burn all the homes,/ let the innocent know
that we are from USOs/ in the oceans below.”

Arthur Brown’s Kingdom Come-Journey [T]
Opening track of Arthur Brown’s (of “Fire” fame) third Kingdom Come effort Journey. For fans of early synth styling, Hawkwind and fantastical intergalactic atmosphere.

Skeptics-Agitator [D]
A slightly more sentimental sound from New Zealand’s industrial/noise band Skeptics off the Skeptics III lp. The rest of the album, released on the infamous Flying Nun, is a wonderful yet relentless beating.

Shock Headed Peters-Blue Rosebuds [T]
Shock Headed Peters, featuring Karl Blake who is known for his association with Current 93 and Death in June, offers the song Blue Rosebuds off the early 80’s A.L.F. comp lp called Devastate to Liberate. This song brings together the best elements of Black Sabbath and angular synth-punk.

Screamers-I Wanna Hurt [D]
This is off Demos 77-78. A perfect, early marriage of snotty punk and electronics. One of the original L.A. punk bands, active 75-81, who went on to inspire bands such as Devo among many others.

Elton Motello-Pocket Calculator [T]
Starting his career with the much covered Jet Boy, Jet Girl in ‘77, this particular selection comes from the 1980 lp Pop Art. Driving, upbeat punk a la Buzzcocks meets Devo.

UJ3RK5-The Anglican [D]
Incredible art/synth punk band from Montreal. It’s got what you need if you’re into angry and silly at the same time.

UJ3RK5 (the 5 is silent)-S/T EP
SPK-Makano [T]
A pioneering late 70’s industrial group hailing from Austrailia. Makano comes from the 1983 release Auto Da Fe which compiles their early Industrial Records singles from 1979 (Industrial Records was, of course, the label started by Throbbing Gristle.)

Jean-Paul Sartre Experience-Flex [D]
Alternative pop coupled with bleak, existential lyrics. They put out the video for this single on a hundred dollar budget.

Debris-One Way Spit [T]
Hailing from Chickashaw, OK, Debris opens their 1976 lp Static Disposal with one of the genre’s earliest art-punk explosions. Taking influences from Captain Beefheart and The Stooges, complete with all your favorite psyched-out electronic noise. A rarity and a must hear!

A Stark Reality-Junkman’s Song [D]
Peanut Butter Wolf pulled this darker children’s soundtrack out of obscurity by re-releasing it on Stones Throw in ‘03. Great distorted vibraphone.

Stark Reality-Discover Hoagy Carmichael’s Music Shop
Treatment-Stamp Out Mutants [T]
Treatment were a UK band who released this single in 1981. Combining the best elements of psychadelia and high energy punk rock.

Treatment-Stamp Out Mutants 7”
Death Grips-Guillotine (It Goes Yah) [D]
For me, this is the stand out track from the recently released Ex Military mixtape by Death Grips. Haven’t been able to find out too much info on this except that it was uploaded to Archive.org on April 28th and the drummer of Hella plays heavily effected drums on a song or two. Aggressive, blown out rap with beats ranging from minimal glitch to Link Wray loops. Much of the execution (YAH!) is strong, but it seems to miss the mark at certain points (but, whatever). D/l this business.

Coil-Solar Lodge [T]
Better known as John Balance and Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson (of Throbbing Gristle/Hipgnosis fame) this track comes from the 1984 lp Scatology. Metallic percussion driven dirge industrial rock. Need not say more.

Doo-Dooettes-L.A. Nickel [D]
This masterful 8:35 tape collage is track 2 of disk 7 from the bountiful 10-disk set The Lowest Form of Music-L.A.F.M.S-1973-1994. The Doo-Dooettes were comprised of (sometimes up to 5) founding members of The Los Angeles Free Music Society.

Robert Calvert-Aero-Space Age Inferno [T]
Robert Calvert was a pivotal character in both Hawkwind and the emerging punk movement, hence his influence on characters like Jello Biafra. This record is his solo debut and utilizes members of hawkwind circa ‘74. It stands as one of the best proto-punk, space rock records of the 70’s.

Robert Calvert-Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters
Dr. John-Jump Sturdy [D]
This record changed everything I thought I knew about Dr. John. Sonically unique, tripped out, hazy and funky, Gris Gris is perfect in it’s effortless swagger with the album art to back it up. This is one of the least far out tracks on it, but a gem none-the-less.

Nash the Slash-Swing Shift [T]

Nash the Slash-Children of the Night
Tom Recchion-Space Ship [D]
Some wonderful intergalactic escapism from Doo-Dooettes’ keyboard player and L.A.F.M.S. figurehead Tom Recchion. This is from the album Chaotica, a powerhouse built with keyboards and Esquivel reel-to-reels. The Mutant Sounds blog put it best: “Dizzying and deformed in all the most subtle ways, this candy coated surrealist audio fantasia is a never-ending fount of pure pleasure.”
